Weather Closing Policy

In general, we assume the College will stay open to serve the student body. Indeed, even if we officially close, certain “essential” personnel will be required to report so we can provide student meals, keep buildings warm, clean and safe and assure that movement around campus can continue.

In the event of inclement weather, a decision will be made as early as possible in the morning and conveyed to the radio and television stations shown on the bottom of this memo. Tune in to those stations for guidance. If you are deemed “essential” personnel, your supervisor will contact you regarding your work schedule. You can also call 279-5000, ext. 7669, for an alert of whether the campus will be closing. This line will be activated, with an announcement of closing status, at the same time the media is informed. For students in the Adult Degree Completion program, this line will also announce closing at any of Keuka’s satellite teaching centers.

If, during a workday, the weather deteriorates, a decision will be made whether an early closing is to occur. That decision will be communicated through each division head and will provide specifics on time of closing, etc.

If the College remains open, employees are expected to attend. However, we recognize the wide geographical area in which our employees reside and the variety of local weather. If an employee is concerned about his/her safety in coming to work in bad weather, he/she may call in and use any accrued personal day, floating holiday or vacation day if he or she chooses to stay at home. The same applies for anyone leaving prior to any official closing.

Should it be necessary for the College to officially close due to the weather, the College will compensate hourly personnel regularly scheduled to work that day. Those “essential” personnel who are required to work during an official weather closing will receive a compensatory day off at a mutually agreed upon future date, or compensation at regular rates if compensatory time is unable to be provided. If you are not “essential” personnel and you choose to come to work even though the College is officially closed, there will be no additional compensation above the full day paid.
