Overall Responsibilities
As needed: Provide sign language interpreting services for deaf and hard of hearing faculty, staff, and students. Serve as a liaison between the hearing impaired and hearing communities.
Specific Responsibilities
- Perform effective sign language interpreting and transliterating services for faculty, staff and students and according to accepted American Sign Language/English interpreting procedures.
- Provide sign language interpreting services in an educational setting for faculty, staff, and students including interpreting for lectures, labs, seminars, individualized instruction sessions, meetings, appointments, and exams.
- As needed: Provide interpreting services for college-hosted activities such as convocations, commencements, orientations, and lecture series.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in related field.
- Possession of an appropriate and valid certification issued by either the:
- National Association of the deaf (NAD) (Level 4/5)
- National Registry of Interpreters for the deaf (RID) (CI&AT)
- NAD-RID National Interpreter Certification (NIC) (Advanced/Master)
- Code of ethics for the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf.
- Ability to communicate effectively to the deaf and hearing impaired using American Sign Language.
- Higher education experience preferred including knowledge of the deaf culture and the issues faced by college students who are deaf and hard of hearing.
